What liquids are in the carry-on baggage permitted? To carry liquids in hand luggage without any problems through the Security check and to be able to take it with you on the plane, there are a few rules to be observed. The EU hand luggage directive, which has been in effect since 2006, describes the following: For safety reasons, only small quantities of liquids may be carried on board aircraft. These regulations continue to apply, only modified regulations apply to duty-free purchases.
- Since January 2014, all duty-free liquids purchased at airports or airlines can be carried as carry-on baggage.
For this purpose, the duty-free liquids must be sealed in a security bag with a red border together with the purchase receipt at the time of purchase.
Please note that with some airlines these purchases are counted as regular hand luggage and the permitted weight is exceeded as a result. - Liquids must be packaged in containers of up to 100 milliliters each in a 1 liter clear, resealable plastic bag.
- One 1 liter bag is allowed per passenger.
- All other liquids are still not permitted and should be carried in checked baggage.
- Since January 2014, medicines that are needed during the trip and are transported in hand luggage have been checked using special control techniques.
- In the case of medication, the need must be credibly proven, for example with a prescription or certificate.
Cosmetic items can generally be taken in hand luggage. However, one must not exceed the allowable quantity limit as they fall into the liquid category. Solid cosmetic items such as powder or eyeshadow do not fall under the quantity limit.
Please note that the classification of what is solid and what is liquid is not always handled uniformly at the different airports.
